Nik Halik, a one-time muso who has played alongside some of Australia's most famous and talented singer-songwriters, has come from the brink of financial collapse to multi- millionaire status in a few short years. At only 35 he's just your regular bloke-next-door kind of a mate.

But when it comes to taking charge of his future he's very passionate. “I'm very goal oriented, I'm very specific,” he says. “Be very specific about what you want in life. Don't leave it to one day. Is one day ever going to happen?”

Nik's parents were illiterate immigrants to Australia who nonetheless had a very strong work ethic. In fact, in part it was that strong work ethic that kept them slaves to their class and the financial merry-go-round. His mother was a machinist for Toyota and his father drove trucks.

Nik's experience of his father was as a semi-stranger who came home for four hours every two weeks. “My father said make dissatisfaction work for you,” he said. And Nik did. Unfortunately, Nik's father died a hard working man, he never knew the joys of financial freedom that his son discovered. According to Nik his father was just like millions of other Australians -- he worked a job which kept him just over broke. ``Do you realise that 96 per cent of Australians are dead broke? That's the blind leading the blind,'' he said.
Thank heavens, you say, for superannuation. Wrong again, says Nik. “750 families control the world's finances. You need $1.8 million in assets to give you an income of $1,100 per week (in today's dollars). What a joke superannuation is . . . it's just a pension. It's an illusion that superannuation will pay handsomely.”

Nik began on his road to riches after poker machines squeezed nightclub musicians out of the money. It was a bumpy road, one that took him deeper into spiralling debt, paying bills and mortgages on credit card. Ironically it was debt that saved him from bankruptcy -- the principles of leverage and cumulative interest to be precise.

How did he turn over $100,000 of credit card debt (just the tip of his iceberg) into a multi-million dollar property and share portfolio that generates enough income to loll about in lavish retirement?
“There's nothing brainy in making money. This system does not discriminate. Anyone can do it, regardless of age,” he said. “How do you make money? Find someone who's successful and model their system,” he says.

For Nik that system is trading the Financial Markets to a detailed plan of analysis. He spends no more than an hour of every week day checking the Financial Markets and executing trades.
“Anything more than five hours a week is a job as far as I'm concerned,” he said. Remember that JOB is just over broke.

After a jolting takeoff powered by full afterburners my MIG 25 quickly rose to six miles--the height at which passenger jets cruise--but we do it subsonically. Supersonic speed can only be achieved up high, because a sonic boom near the ground would break too many windows down below. As we approach the speed of sound--close to 700 miles per hour-I gaze at the instrument gauges. The needles--and the plane--should jerk when we break through it. Sure enough, just as the gauge flashes Mach 1, there's a shudder, then the ride becomes incredibly smooth. For the first time in my life, I am travelling faster than thunder. We continue to accelerate, to Mach 2, breaking the sound barrier again. There is no jolt this time, and the sensation of speed is hard to judge because any frame of reference is absent; we are way above the clouds. At 70,000 feet we reach Mach 2.5 and are still climbing. The sky has turned a very deep blue and the Earth below is distinctly curved. At just under 100,000 feet, travelling 3,478 kph Mach 3.5 the sky is cold black and a translucent-blue hue hangs over the curvature. We now slow appreciably. There isn't enough air for the jet to push against. I am now at the Edge of Space.
